Design Context/ Content

For my Design Context submission I am going to be making something a little different. I love packaging and wanted something that reflected this. I dont feel that a publication shows my love for packaging so I have decided to design a set of postcards and packaging for them instead. I am going to be making 20 postcards based upon 20 packaging studios that I love from across the World. Each postcard will have an image on the front which will be a piece of the studios work and on the back there will be contact details and a bit of writing about the studio and why I like them. The idea is to make them look like real postcards.

The packaging will be a box that the postcards will come in and there will also be a fold out about me and my design context, like an overview. I just feel this idea is a lot more me and reflects on the work of others I love and my own design practice.

Below are the 20 studios I will be using to create the range of postcards, they have been carefully selected for their innovative and exciting packaging. Making my Design Context in this way also means that it will be more interactive and this is one of the main reasons I have a passion for packaging.

I will start by looking at the studios I already know:

'In creative we conquer'

Robot Food are a small studio based at The Tower Works, Leeds. They're motto is 'In creative we conquer', they are a branding and packaging studio that have worked with some amazing clients. The re branding of Jammie Dodgers is one of my favourite pieces of packaging design by Robot Food and having the chance to visit them meant I gained an insight into the concept of the new packaging design.

'We strip away the baggage to leave only what matters: design which gets noticed and chosen.'

JKR Global, a packaging and branding studio based in London strive through creating a brands visual equity. I have chosen their packaging design of Bassetts Allsorts as an example of their work as I think the colours and the fun that shines through the design is brilliant.

'Our mission is short and simple: every brand we touch must have a distinct point of view. This is what we live by, each and every working day.'

Elmwood is an ever growing branding and packaging design studio based around the World, including Leeds. I have picked out this re brand of Anchor Squirty Cream as I love how they have made the brand fun and unique. It is something that can be interacted with and to me thats a very special thing.

'We are designers, we believe, we create.'

Pearlfisher, based in London and New York are a very successful design company who have a very successful portfolio in packaging design. I found them after finding out that they designed the packaging for Cadbury Dairy Milk.

'We are sold on ideas'

B and B studio are a design studio based in London, they have a very creative portfolio of packaging design, working with a variety of clients. One particularly successful design would be that of Innocent Juice, its a very fresh new look that works perfectly with Innocents brand identity.

Together design are a multidisciplinary studio based in London, they pay great attention to detail and look at a brand as a bigger picture. My favourite piece of theirs would have to be the beauty packaging they have done for Boots. So elegant and sophisticated.

'We are addicted to big ideas that challenge and surprise from client to consumer.'

Shout design are a packaging design studio based in Auckland, New Zealand. They work within the food packaging industry and have a very strong portfolio. I really love this range of bake ware, there is a strong brand consistency and the colours work well with the concept.

'We only choose to work on projects that we have a personal belief in and that we would be consumers of ourselves.'

Big Fish are an award winning brand, design and marketing consultancy based in London. They have worked with some very big clients, I love the boldness of their work and how each piece of packaging is so different. This design for Yeo Valley is one of my favourite due to the hand rendered feel and the use of rich colours.

'Our philosophy is simple, to offer a friendly service that delivers thoughtful, creative and engaging work.'

Charlie Smith Design is a small design studio based in London, they work on a variety of different projects ranging from packaging design to websites. I particularly loved the simplicity of this range of scented candles for John Lewis, the soft colours against the dark grey really compliment each other.

'We make brands beautiful'

Coley Porter Bell are a design studio based in London, they work on many aspects of a brand including naming, packaging, corporate identity and brand environment. They believe in making brands beautiful which can be seen throughout their portfolio of work. I love the vectored illustrations on the John West tuna range, it keeps the design simple and very clear.

'We're Graphic Design experts.'

Stocks Taylor Benson are a Graphic Design studio in Leicester, they produce strong packaging design for a variety of clients and take a no bullshit approach. This range of gifts Vintage Blooms was designed for Morrisons. I love the use of the illustrative flowers and the typeface which keeps the design very feminine and elegant.

'The journey is the common thing we share, but we choose to enjoy it as much as the destination.'

D Studio are a small studio based in London, their main focus is branding which them stems through to packaging. I came across their work for Burnt Sugar and loved the design approach and concept behind the design. The use of hand rendered type works well with the bold colours.

'Working with brave clients to inspire people through simple, meaningful design. It's what we believe in.'

Believe in are a small studio based in Exeter, they believe in telling a story through a brand. They work both through digital and print as well as packaging and design for environment. The reason I have chosen this piece of work in particular is because of the use of dye cut, I like how the circular cut out leads back to the logo yet both compliment the rectangular format of the packaging and the product.

'Our goal is simple: empower clients with relevant, innovative, high quality work that helps their business flourish.'

Glasfurd and Walker are a small multidisciplinary design studio based in Vancouver. They have a key focus on producing high quality, conceptual designs. This award winning design for Dirty Apron is an example of the work that they do. I love the simplicity of the design and how it works in harmony with the actual product.

'Brand is everything.'

Smith and Milton are a brand and design communications group based in London, they believe that a brand should generate business success, motivate employers and engage with consumers. I spotted that they designed for Warburtons (which has to be the best bread in the World) and I loved it. It says what it needs to and the colours of the different thicknesses allows them to be very recognisable.

'Design is an endless exercise in communication.'

Mouse Graphics is a small design studio with a specialism in packaging design, they work primarily within the food industry and have won many prestigious awards for their design. I particularly love the use of bold, yet simple use of photography on this packaging for a product called Pebbles.

'Studio h is a design company founded on a keen seasoned enthusiasm.'

Studio h is a small design studio based in London, they work with both national and international clients and primarily focus on brand identity and packaging. This design for The Living Food Kitchen is part of a product range. I was particularly drawn to the logo and its simplicity. The colours of the design also work well with the vectored logo design.

'We embrace brands to create growth.'

Embrace Brands are a design studio based in London who primarily focus on brand identity and packaging. I have always wondered who created the designs for Teapigs and just happened to come across Embrace Brands.I love how the teas are depicted by illustrations, its a good way to define each product and make it easily recognisable to a customer.

'We mix some of the best British designers along with talent from around the globe.'

I love dust are a multidisciplinary design boutique based in East London and Hampshire. They work on a range of projects from illustration to packaging. Whilst looking through their portfolio I noticed they had a very distinct style that I love. Their design approach is very unique and special.

'We believe great stories aren't told, they're crafted.'

Peck & Co were founded in 2004 and are based in Nashville, Tennesse. I came across their work on Lovely Package and loved their range of packaging design. They work on a range of projects from packaging and editorial to logo design. I really liked the colours and use of illustration on these simple Jam jar designs.
